t was on a stormy winter’s night in August of 2012 when we found a dog on our property that was howling continuously. We tried to chase him away the entire weekend but it kept on coming back. We eventually decided after that weekend to at least give the dog something to eat, as it hadn’t eaten anything all weekend. However, by doing so we realized the risk that we were taking!! The chances of the dog leaving after being fed would be very slim. But we both agreed and chose to feed it.
After the meal we gave the dog a blanket because it was very cold and wet outside. After Adi put the blanket over her, she stretched out her paw toward him and we interpreted that as a “thank you”! Right there and then she stole our hearts and we decided to take responsibility for her. We named the dog “Oceans”, because we lived so close to the sea.
It was an exceptionally cold winter and when we heard an announcement over the radio that all pets should be kept inside because of the cold, Oceans ended up moving into the house, but only as long as she stayed in her designated area near the front door. However, before she was allowed to set foot in the house, she first had to take a trip to the vet and the parlor. Unfortunately, even a good bath didn’t get rid of the odor but we decided we would just have to try and bear the smell until the worst part of the winter had passed!
A week later she got sick and we had to take her to the vet. She was released three days and R1000 later ($100)! At this point we couldn’t believe how much this dog was costing us and we were not prepared for it in any way! However to see God’s provision even for a dog spoke volumes to us at the time! This homely little dog had somehow crept into our hearts and in no time had become a part of our family, to the extent that she even started sleeping in our bedroom on the floor at night, bad smell and all! Adi and I have never been a fan of having pets, so this was really a weird situation even for us, and for everyone who knew us!
Three weeks later we were playing outside in our yard with Oceans. It was the first time that she had so much life and she was running and chasing Adi around the house, when the horse and cart people who collect rubble, passed by our home and recognized the dog. They told us that the dog belonged to the people on the next block at a double story house. Adi without hesitation took Oceans with him and decided to go check it out, inwardly hoping she wasn’t their dog.
When he arrived at the house, the owner immediately recognized his dog and was so grateful because he thought she was dead. It turned out that the owners were the same husband and wife we had counseled back in June. Oceans, whose real name was Zoe, had been with them for the past fifteen years!! The man was so grateful to us for rescuing his dog and could see that we had taken such good care of her, even to the point of having her groomed, which even they had never done. All four of us were amazed at how our paths had crossed again and all because of their long lost dog.
A few weeks later, we decided to check up on the couple to see how they were doing and they said that they were still doing well. We haven’t been able to connect with them again but are hoping to arrange a time very soon. As sad as we were to lose Oceans, we were amazed to see how the Lord used a dog to reunite us with this couple. It seems to us that God has placed them in our lives for a reason. I can’t help but feel that Part 3 of this story may still be in the making as we continue to pray for the opportunity to witness to them about the Lord.
The lesson that we have learned from this experience is God’s supernatural provision! Prior to this, Adi questioned having kids at this point in time because of our financial situation. However, this experience opened his eyes to see how God would even provide for a dog! We had spent a total of about R1500 ($150) for food, medical expenses and grooming and yet God faithfully provided every last cent in a supernatural way. So yes, our faith has been boosted, and we are ready, now more than ever, to start a family in spite of our financial limitations!
